In a first, Chennai school has garbology
Have you heard of ‘garbology’? A Chennai-based school has included the subject in its school syllabi. Two foreigners Ribhu Vohra and Chandrah Nusselein who are siblings from Auroville are behind the syllabus. To pass in the subject, students have to segregate waste, manufacture home made paper, generate compost and handle e-waste.

Garbage collectors visiting Arsha Vidya Mandir on Velachery Main Road, Guindy, on their daily rounds are going empty-handed these days. For a high school, which has 480 students, it sends out as little as one kg of waste to the landfills. What happens to the rest? All the waste from the school is segregated and is used for composting or recycling purposes. And, it is done by the students themselves.

Team India off to Thailand
Chennai, India, July 31, 2014: India’s team of five elite young debaters were given a warm send-off yesterday to compete in the World Schools Debating Championships (“WSDC”), hosted at Assumption University, Bangkok. The international competition, held every year in a different location, has been the world’s leading school-level debating tournament for the past 25 years. The tournament will run from 5 – 15 August 2014, culminating in a Grand Final on 14th, August at the United Nations Conference Centre (UNCC).

The BBC Symphony Orchestra gave school children an extraordinary experience
It is not often that you get to listen to a western classical composer presenting his best composition live in a symphony orchestra in Chennai. This happened twice over the past weekend: First, when the 15-piece string, wind and brass sections opened with Paul Rissmann’s medley from his award-winning composition: The Chimpanzees of HappyTown, for the lucky school students, who attended the music workshop by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (SSO) on Thursday last; second, on Friday, when the full complement of the orchestra regaled children at the packed Lady Andal hall with Stomp by James MacMillan with the composer wielding the baton.

A three day trip was arranged for class X to Rajapalaiyam with focus on learning about biodiversity, value of Biodynamic farming and its relation for a sustainable environment. 48 children accompanied by 4 teachers had gone for the trip and they enjoyed the trip.
