Weaving Sustainability into Learning: An Artisan Workshop Experience

Arpitha Reddy

At our school, sustainability is more than a concept; it is a way of life. Through programmes such as Garbology 101, Know Plastics, and Sea Change, students learn about waste, micro plastic pollution, and the impact of human choices on human and environmental health.

Students actively measure and analyse the waste generated on campus, reflect on behavioural change, and suggest ways to reduce or avoid waste. Alongside this, hands-on organic farming helps them understand the interconnections between soil health, human health, and ecological balance, while linking these experiences to classroom science.

Sustainability is reinforced through daily practices such as separating waste at source, encouraging mindful consumption, and implementing system-level changes wherever possible. These practices help students connect larger environmental concerns to their everyday lives.

Students from Grades III to VIII also participate in a weaving programme where they work with ready yarn. This learning was enriched through a recent artisan workshop with indigenous producers of desi cotton. During the workshop, students observed the process from raw cotton picked from the boll to hand-processing the fibre and spinning it into yarn ready for weaving, using traditional tools.

The workshop was well received by the students, many of whom could immediately relate it to their own weaving experiences at school. They were especially curious about how yarn is made by hand and closely observed the women artisans as they worked, engaging actively and asking thoughtful questions.

Students were also introduced to contemporary textile materials and discussed the effects of synthetic fabrics on human health and the environmental impact of microfibers released into water bodies. The overall intention was to sensitise students without overwhelming them, encouraging awareness, informed choices, and responsibility towards a more sustainable future. Such experiences are part of our on-going effort to help students understand their role in shaping a more thoughtful and sustainable world.
